Great question Dean.

Before we can answer the two questions burning on every sponsors mind (when is it going to be done and how much is it going to cost) we need to come up with some high level estimate as to ‘how big’ this thing is.

So to do that, we need to do come up with a high-level guess.

Gathering high level user stories as part of the inception deck exercise is one way to do that.
Simply write down all the high level stories your customer would like to see and then guess how long you think it will take.

So yes. Do high level story gathering as part of your inception deck and estimate the total to get some idea of whether you have a 1, 3, or 6 month long project.

It’s my understanding that the book outlines a project be executed in the following phases:

1. Inception Deck
2. Project Planning
3. Project Execution

Part of the inception deck is to “Size It Up”, or provide a high-level estimate.

Is it at this point that user stories should be gathered and their size estimated, or is it best to wait and gather user stories later?
