Good Exercises for Beginner

Hello, I am working through the excellent book “Beginning Mac Programming” and am now on Chapter 8. I am very much enjoying it but I would like to have some exercises to do on my own to reinforce the material being learned. Any ideas?
Or should I just continue picking up what I can and once I learn more try something a bit more substantial?

By the way, where did you buy that book? I am also new to programming and web designing that is why I need to read and read some tutorials to sharpen my skills. i’ve got a training too from my wordpress developer friend but i felt like I cannot rely on him anymore.
