I’ve not seen any mention of OpenStreetMap in the contents or the sample chapters of the book. Considing they are now becoming an increasing player in the open source and open geo data markets, it be worth including them. There are many tools that you mention that are used by OpenStreetMap.

Most of the desktop GIS applications can’t consume OSM data.
