Hi,

I’ve relatively new to Dojo.

Wondered if you had any thoughts on the usefulness of DojoX Wire which I read about here:

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/blogs/page/barcia?entry=mvc_dojo_grid_and_itemwritestore

and here:

http://dojotoolkit.org/book/dojo-book-0-9/part-5-dojox/dojox-wire

Thanks!

I have heard lots of buzz about DojoX Wire, and can see its usefulness. But it’s also fairly young (about a year, if I remember right), and so it didn’t make the cut for this edition of Mastering Dojo. We had a hard time cramming the material we have into 500 pages, unfortunately.

Personally, I’ll be watching how developers integrate Wire with widgets. If that takes off the way that DTL (Django Template Language) support in Dojo has, that’d be excellent.

Craig – can you make sure you include a section about all the cool stuff you would’ve liked to put in your book so we know what missed the cut? I’ll try to add some comments later, only about 100 pages through the first rev.

Sure We were batting around this idea a few days ago. So hearing that people want it, we’ll put it in!

There’s very very little documentation on dojox.wires (literally, it’s still mainly the Powerpoint and a couple of IBM posts, and the source). I’d like to see a few pages about it —in an electronic addendum, a next book revision, a downloadable PDF, whatever. In particular, a couple of more complex examples so one could get a better idea of the benefits vs. just the usual connect stuff. Also, I’d like to know if there’s any significant performance hit .. and, any limitations - for example, it’s got a couple of widget adapters … perhaps a couple of examples showing how to use it with “some other widget” (like something in dojox that’s not grid/tree/table). Anyway, random thoughts there….

It would also be nice to see a discussion about more of the Stores - particularly the JSONPath stuff. Not to mention a couple of pages showing how one might connect up a “Refresh” button to a store (for a grid or a dropdown, etc.) -- that’s a common request I’ve noticed.

Well I could go on, but then that’d be another book I guess :)

Thanks,
Dylan Tynan
