relation "schema_migrations_id_seq" does not exist on rake:db:migrate posted by Wayde Gilliam @ Sun, 20 Jul 2008 07:30:26 -0000

Migrated my rails app from 2.0 to 2.1 and getting this strange error whenever running a migration (using postgres 8.3.1):

rake aborted!
PGError: ERROR: relation “schema_migrations_id_seq” does not exist
: SELECT currval(‘schema_migrations_id_seq’)

Any ideas on why and how to resolve?

Thanks – Wayde

So what's new? posted by Sam Ruby @ Thu, 17 Jul 2008 17:44:20 -0000

If you get stuck, comment here.

If something confuses you but you eventually figure it out, mark it in the errata. Even “user errors” which are recorded in the errata are treated very seriously.

In prior editions, common errors and the solutions are listed in many chapters. This edition will retain such and even expand it based on errata.

That’s why errata is so important—I, for one, can’t always see what is obvious to me that might not be obvious to everybody else.

So what's new? posted by James West @ Tue, 15 Jul 2008 08:09:11 -0000

Alan,
I am new to RoR and I have not seen the other versions of this book so am unable to comment on most of what you ask.
I will however say that this version so far has updated the code for the Depot app to make it work in 2.1
There are still a lot of chapters that have not been updated yet but it has been some time since there was a new release of the book so there should be quite a few changes in the next release.

Are you not entitiled to a free upgrade to this book having bought the previous version?

Anyway it was the best £15 I ever spent, sometimes it’s worth just spending the money and this was one of those times for me.

I have been able to follow the book with ease, my only problem is that my learning curves are a little flatter than they used to be lol!

I doubt this really answers your main questions which I guess will really only be answered by reading it apart from to say that as an experienced programmer this was a gd send to me to help me get my head round Rails 2.1 and I am eagerly awaiting the next release of the pdf

So what's new? posted by Alan Slater @ Mon, 14 Jul 2008 21:05:03 -0000

Sell it to me! (A rails novice with the 2nd edition already, thinking of getting the 3rd ed beta in .pdf to get working with right away)

Here’s two particular questions, but any info and general enthusiasm is welcome:-

1) Is the main example still Depot? If so, are there any changes to it other than the neccessary changes for Rails 2? And any plans for additions?

2) Is this issue addressed at all: One problem I and a lot of understandably forum-shy people had with the 2nd edition was, some parts don’t quite contain all the information you need if you don’t have a solid background in programming.

About half of the book is perfect and paced exactly right, even for people like me for whom Rails is our first attempt at anything like real programming. But, about half has gaps that are presumbly obvious and second nature to programmers, and not too hard for the rest of us to grasp even with a half-sentence explanation in context, but almost impossible if those half sentences aren’t there.

It’s hard for me to give examples, but I think most of the places I tripped up were with those aspects of Ruby that ARE like java, php etc (rather than aspects of ruby that aren’t, which are all explained perfectly). Is this addressed at all in the 3rd edition? Are there any (non-lazy) non-programmers involved in giving feedback?

Phusion Passenger / mod_rails posted by David Gallello @ Mon, 14 Jul 2008 07:22:26 -0000

For what it’s worth, I’ve now deployed two small web applications to a Slicehost slice using Passenger and am pretty impressed with the relative simplicity in which it works. Average time spent launching a rails app to each slice: about 30 minutes. I was half-way through Ezra’s book when I first came across the Passenger gem and I haven’t looked back (though I still highly recommend Ezra’s book on Rails deployment…the half that I did read was superb). I think the Passenger gem is going to rapidly increase the number of new rails developers for no other reason than it takes the headache out of deploying small web sites. Whether it’s ready for prime-time apps is yet to be seen.

Hey Robert, I’m a novice as well but I just spent a week shadowing a pro. Git and github.com are the way to go. You both keep repositories of the code on your machines and you push and pull changes to and from github.com to do updates. Textmate and the console is my preference.

Chapter 3: Installing Rails - Keep it! posted by Sam Ruby @ Fri, 11 Jul 2008 10:18:45 -0000

I’m still new to OS X, and frankly I’m a bit surprised at how hard basic things are as compared to Ubuntu, but in any case I started from the instructions I found on Developing Rails Applications on Mac OS X Leopard that I found on the Apple Developer Connection website.

In a subsequent pass over the book, I’ll look into adding information on compiling the code for yourself and introduce the notion of not overwriting the system installed versions.

Chapter 3: Installing Rails - Keep it! posted by Serban Porumbescu @ Fri, 11 Jul 2008 08:58:02 -0000

Hi Sam.

I have a comment and suggestion on section 3.3 Installing on Mac OS X. The directions as written will certainly work, but I’m concerned about directly upgrading the versions that ship with Leopard or 10.4.6. Apple could mess with your installation during a future update or your modifications could affect other applications dependent on Apple’s versions.

I suggest starting with the same section 3.3 from the second edition and updating it to reflect any new information (i.e., Leopard and SQLite3 stuff). The hivelogic.com directions have been updated for Leopard ( http://hivelogic.com/articles/2008/02/ruby-rails-leopard) and for Tiger (http://hivelogic.com/articles/2007/02/ruby-rails-mongrel-mysql-osx).

I’m glad to see this chapter is sticking around.

make sure when you migrate to VERSION=5 that you see the drop :payment_types executing. If it isn’t then that is why the error is being thrown… the table already exists. You might have to drop the table manually for rails to sync back up with which version you are using of the app and what version the db is on.

Undoing a migration.... posted by Bill Thayer @ Thu, 10 Jul 2008 14:50:24 -0000

Thank you James & Steve.

My bad. After going through my command history I see I had the syntax wrong. I typed:

depot>rake db:migrate version = 6

it should have been

depot>rake db:migrate VERSION=6

I guess the caps and no spaces matter for the argument VERSION=6.

My next post will be the output from my console after running >rake db:migrate—trace

Here is my 007_create_payment_types.rb file:

class CreatePaymentTypes < ActiveRecord::Migration
  def self.up
    create_table :payment_types do |t|
      t.string :label
      t.string :value

      t.timestamps
    end
  end

  def self.down
    drop_table :payment_types
  end
end

You need to make sure that the migration has

def self.down
    drop_table :payment_types
  end

It seems to me as though your version 6 migration is the migration that created the tables. If you want to remove the table then migrate to the version before that.

I tend to use the roll back migration rather than a specific version number but I guess it all depends on what you actually want to achieve.

Anyway I guess you should look at the migration files that you have and migrate to the one prior to the version 6.

I have not explored the migrate down options yet and this may well prove to be another alternative for achieving the same thing.

Hope this helps
