Hi Stefan,

Sorry to get back to you so late. The book does go over the matrix from a ‘how to use it’ perspective but not from a ‘how does it work’ perspective.

Thanks for your interest!

Hi Mike,

First off sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

The code you supply is what I had in my example but I can’t get it to make a difference on 10.5.2. After digging around on the apple site and such to figure out what happened I think that they removed the functionality in one of the updates. The IB docs still talk about the ‘order in’ and ‘order out’ animations but view seems to no longer respect animations tied to ‘superview’. I’ve removed that bit from the book and started rerunning all my little samples for good measure :)

Thanks!

Hi All,

Thanks for checking out the Core Animation screencast. I’m really excited about this new way to deliver content. This is a whole new way to explore Core Animation together. I’m really looking forward to it!

If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them here.

Hi David,

The framerate on the videos is currently 15 fps.

We spent a lot of time debating and trying various framereates and 15 seemed like a good compromise. When I was reviewing them before pushing I figured that the fps was enough for you to see the effect.

Is there some part of one of the episodes in particular that fails to illustrate the effect? Maybe there is something we could tweak that section (or sections) in the post prod phase to make that better. We’d be glad to try it out.

Thanks for the kind words and for letting me know.

Yes we are creating a new dictionary with each call to move. While that does not hurt anything, it does not help either. I think I will rework that code so that it only gets added once.

Hi Sergey,

Unfortunately with the SDK still under NDA we can’t really discuss iPhone stuff. However to build an app like that on the Mac with CA would be possible using the CATiledLayer and the animations (key frame being one of them). There is a sample app in the code for the book that illustrates the titled layer and several examples of using the various animation types.

Good luck!

Apple’s NDA is still in place so we can’t publish the iPhone specific chapter. However you will find that 80%+ of what is in the book applies directly to what you do with CA in the SDK. The chapter on iPhone explains the 20% you can’t do and a few other specifics.

Lacking in iPhone Content posted by Bill Dudney @ Mon, 01 Sep 2008 20:15:34 +0000

Hi James,

Thanks for the feedback. The iPhone specific material is as yet unreleased. We can not release it until Apple removes the NDA. The alternatives that are specific to iPhone are all discussed in a separate chapter that essentially walks you through the delta.

Sorry for the confusion, we expected the NDA to be lifted much much sooner than it has.

Hopefully the NDA will lift soon and the iPhone specific stuff can go out.

Hi Ugo,

If you want a refund on the book you can send email to support@pragprog.com to get things started. However the iPhone content was only an additional 17 pages detailing the differences between CA on the device and CA on a Mac.

The current beta PDF is what will be printed (apart from the hard copy typesetting stuff).

The content talks about how to get OpenGL ES (as Kyle stated) going on the device but does not cover OpenGL in general. Just the basics of getting an OpenGL context you can put content into. The example gets the rotating cube working on the phone.

Beta Book Available? posted by Bill Dudney @ Thu, 02 Oct 2008 10:48:00 +0000

Skandar,

The book covers getting OpenGL ES up and running via the EGL api that is part of the iPhone SDK (i.e. we don’t cover OpenGL ES, just how to get Open GL ES content running on the device).

The SQLite coverage is there too.

The Errata reporting system should be up soon. I will transfer this over to there when it is.
