Hi!

I would like to buy this book but I saw the last release date (2014-03-31). Should I wait for a new book or buy this edition?

Does anyone have an idea? What do you recommend?

Thank you!

I’ll confirm that an update is in active development, but that’s not a guarantee of availability or pricing. The intent is to have a beta of the book available either before or near when Rails 5.0 final is released.

Rails 5.0 is currently in beta, which means that it has known bugs. In my opinion, betas 1 and 2 were not good enough to recommend; current testing on beta 3 looks promising.

Net: if you want to get started today, do it with the current edition. Doing so means that you will encounter less problems. It does mean that you will need to later learn what the changes are in Rails 5; and that will be covered in the release notes.

If you are willing to wait (most optimistic estimates would be a few weeks, could be longer) and are are tolerant of bugs, check back periodically.

I saw somewhere that the release was going to be in Fall 2015 that’s why I was worried. I checked the date of the book and it said P2.0 (2014-03-31).

If I buy this book I think the one for Rails 5 will be a different book and I won’t get the free ebook update, right? For example they have Agile Web Development with Rails and Agile Web Development with Rails 4 here.

Thanks!

The release date and pricing choices (including whether or not there will be a free upgrade for eBook purchasers) are both yet to be determined, and outside of my control.

The release indeed was going to be in Fall of 2015. My best guess is that it will be in time for RailsConf: http://railsconf.com/ (May 2016).

Plans are firming up, and a tentative date has been set: https://pragprog.com/book/rails5

Beta for Rails 5 is available now. If you bought the previous edition directly from pragprog.com, you get the ebook of this new edition for free. https://media.pragprog.com/newsletters/2016-04-06.html

I have already purchased the Rails 4 version of this book. I am wondering when the Rails 5 version comes out would I have to re-purchase it or shall I get the update free?

Hi,

Once again you have very selective and inconsistent policy on free upgrades.

Laura
