google mail “just works” now, vs what one had to do before using various plugins.

it might be worth mentioning (on say page 617) that since most of the doc out there misleads you into thinking that you need to install a plugin and/or msmtp, etc…

as i recall, this is all i needed to do was add this, with your appropriate account info, to the appropriate environment file, eg: development.rb:

config.action_mailer.delivery_method = :smtp
config.action_mailer.smtp_settings = { 
  :address => "", 
  :port => 587, 
  :domain => "", 
  :authentication => :login, 
  :user_name => "my_account_name_here", 
  :password => "my_password_here" 

i found using gmail a good solution for development, since it doesn’t care where you are like my isp does, who make things difficult if your not at what they consider your “home location”.
